The Open Technology Institute at New America Foundation (OTI) seeks a graphic designer to create compelling visuals for our community technology projects and to add beauty and grace to our related reports and presentations.
OTI’s Field Operations team is adding to successful collaborations in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia, with new collaborations in San Francisco, New Orleans, and in multiple international locations. The work includes citywide strategic planning for broadband access, pilot wireless networks in select areas, and ongoing analysis of broadband adoption projects in terms of their social and economic impact and their implications for privacy and surveillance. We are developing innovative methodologies and models for understanding and addressing issues of equity in urban broadband access.
We work directly with communities to support them in building, maintaining and managing local wireless networks. Using project-based learning and popular education pedagogy, we work with a diverse audience of activists, media makers, technicians, community organizers, and the general public. Educational and training materials must be appealing and accessible, using translatable and adaptable visual language.
The ideal candidate has familiarity with open source as well as proprietary design tools, and works well in a collaborative environment. Must be able to balance multiple deadlines and create design products that work across multiple and overlapping projects. Geospatial/GIS or other data visualization skills a plus. Familiarity with technological illustration and diagramming a plus.
Responsibilities
Create appealing and accessible digital and print design products for multiple audiences, including training materials, slide decks, and reports
Develop a style guide and maintain consistency in visual language across projects
Archive and create design products in reusable formats
Qualifications
Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and with open source design tools such as Inkscape and Gimp.
Demonstrated proficiency with typography, layout, and color palette selection.
Political imagination
Attention to detail
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work and manage time in order to meet multiple deadlines
Familiarity with open source technology, digital literacy, community media, participatory design, and popular education
Flexible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic team player
Fluency in additional languages is a plus.
