The New America Foundation’s Open Technology Initiative seeks a technologist to join our team in Washington, D.C., to be involved in the daily operations, maintenance, and growth of the Measurement Lab platform (http://measurementlab.net).
The right candidate has at least 3+ years of professional systems administration experience, with preference given to those who have a strong understanding of current Internet policy issues. A thorough understanding of Linux and kernel isolation based virtualization, particularly Linux Containers (LXC), is a must. Experience with web content management systems, mobile development, and database administration are also desired.
Responsibilities
Build and maintain the Measurement Lab tools platform.
Manage outreach through the Measurement Lab mailing lists and website.
Document new and existing operational procedures.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of professional systems administration experience.
Comfortable working in UNIX-like environments such as Linux.
Experience maintaining servers and virtual machines based on any kernel isolation tools such as XEN, Linux VServer, or Linux Containers (LXC).
Experience configuring and extending host monitoring tools like Nagios, Zenoss, or Zabbix.
Working knowledge of a variety of scripting and markup languages, such as bash, php, python.
Effective organizational and communication skills.
Ability to prioritize and delegate in a fast-paced environment.
A meticulous, self-motivated, and friendly nature.
Familiarity with the following are desirable but not required:
Experience with system and software deployment tools such as Puppet or Salt Stack.
Experience administering the email ticketing system Request Tracker (RT).
Database administration experience.
Experience building and maintaining RPM packages.
Experience using the Planet Lab research platform.
Experience building and organizing communities around open source software projects.
Proficiency in a language other than English.
