System Administrator Full-time

The New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute seek an enthusiastic, tech savvy individual to join our team in Washington, D.C. Our System Administrator should have a flexible approach to problem solving, broad technical expertise, and the ability to learn and teach new information rapidly and effectively. The ideal candidate will also need a strong understanding of team dynamics, taking the lead or supporting other technologists as appropriate.

The primary goals for the position will include Linux-based application server administration with a focus on networking, security, and optimization. The System Administrator selected for this position will work closely with other peers to maintain server infrastructure, providing reliable, highly available services to the organization, and should automate and standardize systems and applications whenever it is feasible. The chosen candidate will use interesting, innovative and cutting edge technologies to support OTI projects, services, and websites.
Responsibilities

The candidate selected will be responsible for:

Designing, creating, and maintaining components of the OTI web based infrastructure.
Extending operational capacity and implementing internal procedures following industry best practice.
Supporting, maintaining and extending services based on the following core technologies: Debian Linux, BIND, OpenLDAP, Saltstack, Libvirt, LXC, rsyslog, Postfix, Dovecot, Mailman, dspam, Apache, Varnish, Memcached, MariaDB/MySQL, Zabbix, backupninja, SOGo, ejabberd, git, Redmine, Aegir, Drupal, Foswiki, OpenVPN.
Documenting OTI infrastructure and systems
Envisioning and architecting new systems infrastructure to support new and ongoing OTI projects.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have the following required qualifications:

3-5 years experience with Linux systems administration (familiarity with Debian-lineage servers and desktops preferred);
Strong appreciation for FLOSS ethos, and a willingness to find open-source solutions to problems;
Experience supporting users possessing diverse levels of technical expertise;
Experience creating both user-facing and technical documentation; and an ability to find simple, creative solutions to complex problems.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with one or more of the following desired qualifications:

Moderate experience writing BASH and/or Python shell scripts.
Building and operating high-capacity email and listserv systems.
Experience hardening servers against intrusion.
Experience with distributed user management and/or authentication systems, especially LDAP.
Running and optimizing PHP-based websites, including Drupal.
General experience setting up small- to moderate-scale redundant webserver systems, including MySQL/Mariadb, Apache, Varnish, and Memcached.
Administering redundant DNS servers using BIND.
Familiarity with IP networking, routers, switches, and WiFi.
Experience with OpenWRT-based routers.
Experience with distributed filesystems, such as glusterfs.
