The Open Technology Institute at New America Foundation (OTI) seeks a program associate to support our community technology projects and related research.
OTI’s Field Operations team is adding to successful collaborations in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia, with new collaborations in San Francisco, New Orleans, and in multiple international locations. The work includes citywide strategic planning for broadband access, pilot wireless networks in select areas and ongoing analysis of broadband adoption projects in terms of their social and economic impact and their implications for privacy and surveillance. We are developing innovative methodologies and models for understanding and addressing issues of equity in urban broadband access.
The program associate(s) will be an essential contributor to these efforts, conducting interviews or focus groups, analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, and otherwise supporting lead researchers and project managers by organizing and coordinating appointments and events.
The ideal candidate has a familiarity with a range of research methods and/or experience with community media or technology design. We welcome applications from people with experience in other fields, such as public health, ecology, urban planning or economics, but please explain in your cover letter why you want to transition to the field of media and technology and why your experience in a different field would be an asset.
Responsibilities
Assist OTI’s field analysts, research fellows, and field engineers
Edit, proofread, and fact-check a variety of reports and research papers
Analyze, summarize, and present data and research
Write and edit blog posts, briefs, and related media
Interface with community organizations, government officials, and private companies
Work with neighborhood leaders, organizers, and activists on community-owned infrastructure principles and planning
Work with technical staff to develop documentation and materials for training non-technical individuals
Perform various administrative duties as needed
Coordinate logistics for appointments and events
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
Familiarity with a range of research methodologies
Excellent writing and analytical skills
Political imagination
Attention to detail
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work and manage time in order to meet multiple deadlines
Familiarity with open source technology, digital literacy, community media, participatory design, popular education, online privacy or digital surveillance
Flexible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic team player
Group facilitation skills are a plus
Fluency in additional languages is a plus
