HPC2N, Umeå University, is one of the leading national supercomputing centers. We are currently seeking an experienced system engineer to primarily work with our new heterogeneous computing system Kebnekaise.

The main working tasks include operation and system maintenance of HPC2N’s new large scale parallel computer system, Kebnekaise. Working with HPC2N’s other computer resources, including other high-performance parallel computer systems and networks, large-scale disk and tape storage systems, are also included. Responsibilities include operation and maintenance of hardware and software, monitoring, troubleshooting, user support, etc., of heterogeneous systems in a distributed environment. Evaluation of new technologies is an integral part of the work. To give user support is also an important activity.

We work primarily with Linux (Ubuntu and RedHat), but other operating systems are used at HPC2N.

Keywords that occur in the operations include: Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, RedHat, CentOS), GPGPU, Intel KNL, HPC, Queue system (SLURM), parallel file system (Lustre), AFS, security system (Kerberos, SSH), Puppet, EasyBuild, Git, a variety of programming languages (such as C, C ++, Fortran, Java, various scripting language such as Ruby, Python, Perl, and various shell), MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenCL, StarPU, as well as various cloud, grid and web technologies.

Participation in national and international projects occurs.

Master of Science in Computing Science or equivalent.

Demonstrated experience in several of the following areas:

  • Operation of larger distributed parallel systems in the Linux environment (Ubuntu, Debian, RedHat, CentOS)
  • Installation of hardware and software
  • Troubleshooting and profiling tools in parallel environments
  • Programming environments for high performance and parallel computing
  • Script Language: shell scripts, Perl and Python
  • Operation and management of networks and network equipment
  • Automation of repetitive tasks
  • Monitoring of complex heterogeneous computer environments
  • Basic and advanced user support

Since most of the work will be done in an international environment, a high level of proficiency in both spoken and written English is a requirement.

Requirements also include the ability to independently plan, organize, document and follow up on your work, but also on social skills and ability to communicate with colleagues and users.

High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N) is one of Sweden’s leading supercomputing centers, and one of six centers in the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC).
