Passionate about maps, humanitarian response and global community? Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) seeks an Executive Director to dream big building on our successes and lessons. HOT applies the principles of open source and open data sharing to improve the welfare of the communities where we work, especially those at risk of natural disaster or other crisis. Having freely available geographic data has many benefits, one of the greatest is increasing the ability for communities to respond to a disaster. HOT was established in 2010 originally as an informal community, then incorporating as a non-profit corporation in Washington D.C. in the United States. In 2013, HOT became a public charity (501(c)(3)).
Our Executive Director leads the day-to-day operations, works with volunteers, partners and the wider community. We serve to strengthen and grow our support of vulnerable locations around the world by engaging both local and remote community mappers. The Executive Director’s role will be to provide strategic vision and manage delivery of HOT’s mission.
Over the past five years, the HOT community and organization delivered diverse and expansive projects. The Nepal response, with over 7,000 contributors, highlights the opportunity to expand and support HOT’s mission with tools, techniques and programmes. The successful candidate will approach HOT with creativity and drive leading us to grow into the future.
Roles and Responsibilities
Advocate HOT and OSM’s leadership in the humanitarian and digital humanitarian ecosystem. This includes managing relationships and providing guidance to humanitarians, researchers, and partners on HOT’s capabilities and strategic vision.
Fundraise and manage donor relations for programmes and projects to deliver and sustain HOT’s strategic plan.
Collaborate with the Board of Directors to refine HOT’s vision and strategic plan.
Develop an operational plan incorporating goals and objectives to achieve HOT’s strategic direction.
Accountable for all financial matters including budget, audit and reporting.
Develop and engage local OSM communities worldwide within HOT’s mandate.
Foster balance with a large volunteer self-organizing community and HOT's formal partnership with organizations.
Eligibility Criteria
Experience managing multiple donor relationships and programs
Knowledge regarding US non-profit and 501(c)(3) financial and legal requirements
Experience managing day to day operations of an organization with yearly revenue of at least $500,000
Strong leadership, business, non-profit, open source community and partnership management skills
Proficient in written and spoken English, proficiency in a second-language preferred
Experience with OpenStreetMap mapping and/or GIS highly desired
Experience in Humanitarian work or International Development valued
Practicalities
The Executive Director role is remote with some potential project travel. We offer a competitive salary which is subject to the skills and experience. The Executive Director position length is subject to contract negotiation.
