Software Editor – Editor Engagement

What you’ll be doing:

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop new features (such as notifications and messaging) and enhance existing features for Wikimedia sites to improve editor engagement and create a purpose-driven social network
  • Design and develop back-end and front-end components to support MediaWiki extensions
  • Develop MediaWiki core software to support new features and improve existing architecture to improve the efficiency, scalability, and stability of it
  • Conduct design and code review of PHP and Javascript repository commits by other developers working on extensions
  • Work to improve the tools that assist in the above process

The skills and experience you’ll need:

  • 3+ years of experience building web applications
  • 5+ years experience with PHP/MySQL application development, testing and production deployment
  • Experience with Javascript
  • Ability to iterate quickly and meet tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with version control systems (we use Git and Gerrit) and continuous integration systems
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience

Extra points if you have:

  • Extensive experience building large-scale server applications
  • Experience with wikis, or other participatory production environments, and MediaWiki in particular
  • Experience in the Wikipedia community (Please provide your username)
  • Experience contributing to a large open source project. (Please provide URLs to any existing work you may have done.)
  • An interest in free culture, open licenses, etc.
  • Expert knowledge developing and debugging in Linux/Unix (LAMP) environments
  • Expert knowledge of PHP, MySQL, and other relational databases
  • Experience with security implications of PHP and Ajax implementations
  • Experience with cross-browser compatibility testing
  • Experience with operating system internals, file systems, programming language design, compilers, distributed systems, or server architectures
  • Creativity, self-motivation, and a good sense of humor
