SNOMED International is hiring a remote senior Java engineer, to help advance the world’s most comprehensive clinical terminology standard and the software needed to maintain it.

Imagine what it takes to represent every nuance, advancement and relationship between clinical terms, methods and treatments, globally, across ever-evolving medicine. That’s the challenge we address.

We’re the global industry leader and a non-profit organisation. Our open source software benefits tens of millions of public and private healthcare users globally. We release the data standard that allows 43 member countries to base their nation’s health and clinical data ecosystems upon an accurate, standardised, clinical terminology – SNOMED CT.

In this role, you’ll be building the distributed Java services that implement this. You’ll also build the management tools, data visualisations and web browser solutions that support the global community of healthcare terminologists: https://github.com/IHTSDO.

You’ll be joining us during a moment of finding improvements, making enhancements and refactoring, with ample scope to explore better ways of delivering what our communities need. We’re also midway through our five year strategy of delivering SNOMED CT ‘as a service’, and your work will be instrumental in delivering and building upon this.

Upcoming projects for the team

  • Developing terminology software that utilises the far reaches of semantic technology and computer science
  • Adapting our global product delivery method to a SaaS-like architecture
  • Redesigning and replacing older components in our architecture
  • Back-end solutions for new web and data tools to aid implementation with adjacent healthcare ecosystems, and for new software tools for community collaboration and open access to authoring
  • Moving to continual releases across our terminology products

  • A depth of technical ability with Java, accrued in a modern web application context
  • A good understanding of data models and structures
  • A depth of experience with; REST APIs, data-informed back-ends, service oriented architectures, and designing for deployment into AWS or similar
  • Adaptability, openness to change and pragmatism
  • Proactive approach to improving the existing estate and identifying new solutions
  • Appreciation for open source, clean code, testing, good documentation and knowledge sharing
