The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, is seeking a full-time community organizer for our activism team. This is a new position designed to serve as a coordinating point for individuals and groups looking to promote digital civil liberties in their communities, with a very heavy focus on engaging with students and professors.

As a community organizer, your responsibilities will include:

* Researching and writing activism materials to be used by groups interested in self-organizing to promote civil liberties in their communities, and adjusting those materials as new issues arise and for specific audiences * Building a coalition and mailing list of enthusiastic but often inexperienced grassroots organizers, largely from student populations, and providing them direction, support, materials, and education * Reaching out to university professors to teach them about digital civil liberties and how they can integrate these issues into their curriculums or support student groups * Giving dynamic presentations to groups of all sizes * Creating a series of campaign objectives (short and long term), and providing regular updates and reports to the team in San Francisco * Promoting grassroots campaigns via social media and blog posts

Required:

* Excellent speaking skills * Excellent interpersonal communication skills * Excellent writing skills * Flexibility * Passion for and experiences with EFF’s mission of promoting civil liberties * Experience maintaining and contributing to a blog * At least two years of experience organizing online activism for an advocacy-oriented nonprofit organization * Experience with mailing list management and coalition building * An eagerness to learn about new issues * An ability to turn things around quickly and comprehensively

In addition, knowledge of or experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

* Teaching and training experience * Volunteer management or team management experience * Technical skills, including content management systems * Photography and video editing experience * Experience with work-related travel, including remote collaboration * Note that this position will likely require substantial (largely domestic) travel.

The ideal candidate should thrive in conditions that could include lengthy plane rides at all hours, extensive remote collaboration, iterative editing and feedback processes (often with a time delay), and working with unpaid volunteers.

This is a full-time position based in EFF’s office in San Francisco, CA. To apply, send a resume, a detailed cover letter explaining why you are the perfect fit for this position, and links to 3-4 online writing samples to careers@eff.org. Feel free to include links to additional supporting materials, particularly videos of presentations you have given, as well. Inquiries about whether this job can be done remotely or part-time will not be answered. No phone calls please!
